Sommerfeld introduced the fine structure constant a in 1916 to describe the spacing of splitting of spectral lines in multi-electron atoms. It is a dimensionless quantity, expressed in terms of electric charge e, speed of light c, and Planck's constant h : α = 2πe~2/ch . (1)
