ASCT2: a potential cancer drug target

Understanding and targeting the metabolic requirements of cancer cells has become a major focus of cancer researchers and pharmaceutical companies worldwide. There are a variety of transporters that are highly expressed in cancer cells, and which provide essential nutrients to cancer cells, however there is little clinical development of inhibitors targeting these transporters. In particular, there has been an increased focus on glutamine transport and metabolism, with alanine, serine, cysteine transporter 2 (ASCT2; SLC1A5) being a putative therapeutic target due to its high expression in many cancers
