There has been great interest in the prognostic and predictive value of low serum sodium levels since hyponatremia was found to be associated with poor survival in numerous medical conditions such as heart failure and stroke, as well as several solid organ malignancies [1 ]. Hyponatremia has also been implicated in localized renal cell carcinoma (RCC) [2], with two small studies confirming its prognostic value in the metastatic setting [1,3].
