Microorganisms have been on earth probably since the first drop of water, and ever since there has been a contentious co-existence between humans and microbes. This reality is a part of our daily goings-on, and industrial environments are no exception. Water is an important component of most metalworking fluid (MWF) formulations (soluble oils, semisynthetic fluids and synthetic fluids) and, as a consequence, the science of metalworking fluid microbiology has contributed much to our understanding of how to protect worker health and retard the degradation of MWF products.
