On October 1, 2011, ILSAC GF-5 became the mandatory minimum performance specification for passenger car engine oils in North America. This means oils carrying the ILSAC starburst can only claim ILSAC GF-5 performance as ILSAC GF-4 is now obsolete. Our surveys have indicated that most engine oil sold since early 2011 had already been upgraded. Approximately 80 percent of passenger car engine oil sold meets ILSAC performance, with SAE 5W-30 representing close to 50 percent of all the oil sold. SAE 5VV-20 is the next largest grade that is growing followed by SAE 10VV-30, which continues to decline. SAE 0W-20 is the next emerging viscosity grade.
