Russia faces challenging year: Booming fresh produce consumption in Russia could be curbed by economic uncertainties, says the country's largest fruit importer JFC Group

In recent years, Russia's growing fruit and vegetable market, spurred on by an increasingly affluent society, has led to this vast, continent-spanning country becoming a hugely important market not just for Europe, but for Asia and the Americas. The importance of Russia to EU exporters in particular has become strikingly greater by the year. According to trade figures from Freshfel Europe and Eurostat, EU countries exported 1.32m tonnes of fresh produce to Russia in 2006, which was a 15.3 per cent rise on the previous year's total and double the 620,597 tonnes shipped in 2000.
