The Industrial Lubricants Committee had very good attendance for the presentation of Biodegradable Lubricants — From Cradle to Grave presented by Michael E. Webb, Ph.D. of Evonik Oil Additives. Dr. Webb started by defining these products as produced from renewable raw materials that can be used to make various base oils. Vegetable oils are the most biodegradable of the various base oils. Currently there are 275K metric tons of biodegradable lubricants produced in the world, roughly split between the U.S. and Europe. Webb also noted these products can be used for food grade applications. A study of these lubricants shows them priced higher, like the specialty lubricants.
