The ink is barely dry on the ILSAC GF-5 specification and industry is contemplating what's next for gasoline engines. On April 14, oil marketers, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and additive companies met in Detroit to discuss needs for the next oil category. Ron Romano, chairman of ILSAC representing the OEMs, made it clear that OEMs are looking for additional improvements in fuel economy (FE) performance while further improving the oil's ability to protect engines. Although ILSAC GF-5 did provide some significant improvements in FE and engine durability, OEMs felt there was too much of a trade-off between FE and engine protection. A key focus will be to demonstrate FE retention through the entire oil drain interval, averaging 10,000 miles.
