Massive amounts of data provided from drilling rigs are used to improve drilling practices and help engineers optimize well performance by reducing downtime and analogous costs. Many oil and gas companies are monitoring the evolution of big data technology capabilities with the goal to make better decisions throughout planning, exploration, drilling and delineation, thus improving safety, cost-effectiveness, quality of ongoing and future operations. Big data technology has moved into operations of the oil and gas upstream industry as an emerging technology for tackling some operational problems. Within the different engineering fields, big data analytics has still not been successfully implemented for drilling operations and in the management systems terrain. As drilling remains the most critical, complex and costly operation in the oil and gas industry, there is a pressing need not only to improve drilling efficiency, but also to likewise predict and delimitate against future problems. Therefore, adopting this technology and coupling both historical data and current data will make an impact to improve drilling efficiency, increase revenue, lower operational costs, minimize risks and streamline performance forecasts in a timely manner, especially in the current low oil price situation. This article aims at demonstrating the significant business value of big data analytics. A complete survey of big data analytics and both technical and business values in the context of drilling systems design and operation management is presented. The current state of adoption in the area of drilling and completion and the potential of such technologies across the multiple domains of drilling technology are discussed.
