More than 85% of the final energy demand in Germany is attributable to the provision of heat and cooling as well as to traffic.Against the background of a significant reduction in energy requirements(increased efficiency,improved building insulation,...)and increasing electrification,hydrocarbon based products are essential not only for supplying existing vehicle fleet and heating systems.For some applications(e.g.aviation,shipping)alternatives are difficult to imagine.In order to achieve the environmental goal of an almost greenhouse gas-neutral energy and raw material supply by 2050,hydrocarbon-based liquid and gaseous fuels can and must make a significant contribution.The prerequisite for this is that the carbon cycles are closed,i.e.the amount of carbon dioxide released during combustion must be incorporated during fuel production in a timely manner.The article shows the various possibilities for the production of so-called greenhouse gas-reduced fuels and their potential.
