The Great Exhibition in 1851 included the produce of a host of foreign nations, but Japan was not among them. The Japanese mainland had been closed to Westerners for over 200 years, and only a limited range of goods left the country through the Portuguese station on Deshima Island. In Britain most ofjapanese art remained unknown.
