Influence of Spinel Brick Quality on Ladle Glaze Formation for Al-& Si-Killed Steel Slags

摘要

The stringent quality requirements of steel products and associated operational changes in steelmaking process have led to the adoption of various high performing functional refractories by the steel industry. Steel ladle has been one of the major areas to use such functional refractories in different zones of lining. In recent years, spinel bricks as wear lining in metal zone ofAl-killed steel ladles have found wide applications owing to their superior slag corrosion and thermal spatting resistances. The performance of ladle wear lining is largely governed by the ladle glaze formed on the face layer during application. This article presents the chemical, physical, thermal properties and ladle glaze formation mechanism on the bricks of different formulations viz. spinel containing, spinel forming and a mixture of the two and correlation with their performances. The individual metall slag-refractory interaction profile has also been discussed in detail with regard to the slag quality generated during steel refining process. The bricks of each formulation were examined w.r.t. their corrosion resistance against ladle slag of Si-killed steel under laboratory conditions to explore their feasibility to be used as a metal zone wear lining in these ladles.
