DEA Chief Discusses Thinking Behind Mexico Acquisition

German oil and gas producer DEA - already set to merge with compatriot Wintershall (EIF Mar. 14 '18) - has agreed to acquire Mexico-focused Sierra Oil & Gas for an undisclosed sum. The deal will add six Mexican offshore blocks to the five blocks - one onshore, four offshore - in which DEA already holds interests in Mexico. Mexico's new left-wing president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, has taken a tough stance on international oil investment in the country, but this has not deterred DEA from its plan to build a strong presence in the country. DEA CEO Marian Moraeus Hanssen talked to Energy Intelligence about the reasons behind the deal and the company s plans in Mexico.
