Egypt’s coal imports plunged in April

Egypt’s imports of coal fell by 61pc on the year in April, with deliveries from Europe gaining market share from Russian and US supplies. Total imports fell for a sixth consecutive month to 317,000t in April, down by 493,000t on a year earlier and the sharpest drop for any month since at least the start of 2019. Weaker demand from the cement sector — the key coal consumer — limited demand for seaborne supply. Cement frms entered 2020 with high stocks, so plants have been running at lower rates. And sales have fallen this month because of Covid-19 restrictions.
