Chinese coal burn exceeded 1bn t in first half

China’s power utilities consumed a record amount of thermal coal in the first six months of the year as strong power genera- tion propelled coal demand. Coal demand from the power industry rose to 1.06bn t in January-June, up by 90mn t on the year, following last year’s increase of 71mn t to 960mn t, according to data from coal in- dustry association CCTD. The industry’s coal consumption rose with strong winter demand in the first quarter, and an early heat wave in May.
