Glencore looks to expand coal export dominance

Switzerland-based mining company Glencore plans to benefit from underinvestment in Australian thermal coal assets to increase its dominance of the export market. Glencore highlighted its capacity to continue to deliver high-grade coal into the seaborne thermal coal market at a time when underinvestment and reluctance by others to commit capital has reduced competition, as it showed analysts around its Hunter Valley operations in New South Wales. It showed that capital investment in Australian thermal coal mining had been around $100-150mn in the past three years, down from over $400mn in 2012.
