SDK to buy SGL steelmaking electrodes unit

German-based SGL Group received conditional approval from US authorities to sell its global graphite electrode business, used in steelmaking, to chemical producer Showa Denko (SDK) on the condition that SDK sell two SGL graphite electrode sites in the US to a third party. Under terms of the proposed antitrust settlement, Tokyo- based SDK must divest carbon products maker SGL’s US graph- ite electrodes business, including its manufacturing facilities in Arkansas and Kentucky, to Tokai Carbon.
