US coke exports to China rise in January

US petroleum coke exports to China increased substantially on the year in January, while shipments to India slipped from recent highs. US shipments to China rose by 33pc from a year earlier to about 336,900t, the highest since May 2016, according to US Census bureau customs data. China’s increase was even starker in comparison with the prior month, when less than 90,000t exported to the country. China had once been the largest importer of US petroleum coke, but its demand peaked in 2013 as the country shifted away from heavy industrial production and sought to reduce sulphur emissions.
