EU parliament mulls ‘reasonable’ coal phaseout

The European Parliament’s environment committee is consid- ering limiting a proposed €7.5bn in aid for solid fuel industries to only those frms that commit to closing their operations within a “reasonable timeframe”. Aid could also be opened up to the gas sector, if it delivers signifcant emissions savings. Parliament on 4 May discussed legal proposals put forward by the European Commission in January to allocate the funding in 2021-2027 to industries and regions most severely chal- lenged in transitioning towards a carbon-neutral economy.
