Advances in geriatric female pelvic surgery

Female pelvic floor disorders (FPFD), including pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and urinary incontinence (Ul), are significant disease processes that affect the geriatric female population. Both the number and percentage of operations for these conditions are increasing in women aged >65 years [1]. In addition to the usual clinical factors that guide a surgeon's care of women undergoing pelvic surgery, some unique geriatric issues deserve special consideration, as these factors can make the surgical care of older women more challenging. In this review we examine the advances made in the medical and surgical field on the treatment of geriatric women who require surgical therapy for FPFD.
