A comparison of Northern white versus in-basin sand

An analysis of efficiencies and permeability shows benefits of Northern white sand. Horizontal well designs have become progressively longer and more intense in terms of proppant usage. Virtually the entire industry has switched from high-permeability grade proppants like 30/50 to lower permeability grades such as 100 mesh. In fact, at the end of 2014, market surveys indicated demand was split evenly between coarse grades and fine grades in terms of proppant consumption. By the beginning of 2019, Covia estimated that fine grade material makes up more than 75% of demand with 100 mesh comprising more than half of total demand on its own.
