Experiments on the competition between a cue for separation of concurrent sound sources and frequency modulation [French]

The experiments presented here placed frequency modulation in competition with a cue for the segregation of simultaneous sound sources. The value of the segregation parameter was varied in order to find the subject's threshold for perception of two sources. The segregation cue was polyperiodicity. The parameter creating this segregation was the difference in fundamental frequency in the first experiment and the inharmonicity created by stretching the spectrum in the second experiment. Frequency modulation was observed to have an influence on polyperiodicity: the larger the vibrate width, the greater the fundamental frequency difference or spectral stetching needed to obtain the perception of two sound sources.
