Cosmetic alternatives to Botox

The number of new ingredients that have a similar action to botu-linum toxin(namely the suppression of nerve/muscle stimulation)available to cosmetics manufacturers is growing and growing.Here Andrea Weber-Mussmann,head of R&D at Babor Cosmetics,looks at some of the most significant alternatives to Botox.Botox-like products for reducing wrinkles are generating a high level of consumer interest,as can be seen from the success of products such as Lancome's Resolution,Wrinkle Decrease from L'Oreal,or Mimical Control Cream from Babor Cosmetics.The most popular active used is the synthetic peptide Argire-line(acetyl hexapeptide-3,see page 30)produced by Lipotec.This active is still the only one that produces its effect through the same mechanism as that used by Botox.
