Properties Evaluation of Cement-Based Composites Containing Steel Fiber and Silica Fume

An experimental program was carried out to evaluate the mechanical properties of cement-based composites. Test variables included water to cementitious ratio (w/cm), dosage of silica fume and volume fraction of steel fiber. Compressive strength test, direct tensile strength test, splitting tensile strength test and abrasion resistance test were performed and the results were analyzed statistically. The designed direct tensile testing method is a suitable method to estimate the tensile strength of fiber cement-based composites. Test results of multivariate analysis of variance with 95% confidence value show that w/cm and the interaction effects between w/cm and silica fume content have a significant influence on compressive strength. Steel fiber content, interaction effects between w/cm and silica fume content, w/cm and steel fiber content, silica fume content and steel fiber content have a significant influence on splitting tensile strength. Steel fiber content, w/cm and interaction effects between silica fume content and steel fiber content have a significant influence on direct tensile strength. And w/cm, silica fume content and interaction effects between w/cm and silica fume content, w/cm and steel fiber content, silica fume content and steel fiber content have a significant influence on abrasion coefficient. In addition, a multiple regression analysis was used to determine the best-fit relationship between mechanical properties and test variables.
