Recent classification system of modern birds (subclass Neornithes): Newly approved Lithuanian names and the most recent statistics [?iuolaikiniu? pauk??iu? poklas?s (Neornithes) dabartin? klasifikacin? sistema: Naujai aprobuoti lietuvi?ki pavadinimai ir naujausia statistika]
In 2009 the Institute of Ecology of Vilnius University published the multilingual Dictionary of Bird Names compiled by Dr Habil. Corresponding Member of the Lithuanian Ac. of Sci. Me?islovas ?alakevi?ius and Irena ?alakevi?ien?. Based on modern systematics, for the first time the dictionary provides the list of names of all recently living birds of the planet in the Lithuanian language. The number of names listed therein (including those of orders, suborders, families, subfamilies, tribes, genera and species) totals 12,470. Over 11,000 Lithuanian names included in the dictionary have been coined and are presented to the reader for the first time. The dictionary includes names of all 9,842 living avian species of the world that are classified into 2,170 genera, 202 families (with 125 subfamilies and 58 tribes), 45 suborders and 28 orders. The dictionary has been approved by the State Commission of the Lithuanian Language. The current article presents Latin and Lithuanian names of birds listed in the new dictionary, i.e. names of the taxa above the genus level (orders, suborders, families, subfamilies, tribes) arranged according to the most recent world-wide recognised system of living modern birds' (Neornithes) classification, and the most recent statistics.
