Low-Power Booth Multiplier Architecture with Dynamic Operand Interchange Technique for Multimedia Cloud Computing

摘要

In this paper we present a low-power multiplier architecture using dynamic operand interchange technique. The proposed architecture first divides a multiplication operation into several sub-operations, and then two sub-operands of each sub-operation are compared and interchanged with each other if needed to select the operand with a smaller effective dynamic range as a multiplier. These sub-operations are executed independently, and their results are added to produce the final result. Therefore, the probability of an interchange between two operands is even greater, meaning that more partial products can be with zero. Whereas the die area of the proposed multiplier is increased by approximately 9%, the power consumption can be reduced by up to approximately 20% over the existing Booth multipliers. Therefore, the proposed algorithm can be applied to low-power designs for portable multimedia information devices, as well as to huge applications in multimedia cloud computing.
