Particle-stimulated nucleation of recrystallization in the hot-deformed molybdenum alloy MZ-17

Hot deformation was performed on samples of the molybdenum alloy MZ-17 (Mo-1.7%ZrO2) to 50% reduction in height within a temperature range of 800 to 1200 degrees C to investigate the occurrence of particle-stimulated nucleation of recrystallization around coarse ZrO2 particles (about 1.3 mu m in diameter). Hot deformation was performed using a thermomechanical simulator in cylindrical specimens at a strain rate of about 0.5 s(-1) followed by fast cooling. In all tested temperatures recrystallization was only partial and increased with test temperature. There is evidence for three restoration mechanisms acting during warm deformation; i.e., dynamic recovery, either metadynamic or dynamic recrystallization and particle stimulated nucleation of recrystallization.
