Given that a variety of design issues are encountered in different design applications, it takes a long time to educate and train a person as a skilled mechanical design engineer. Therefore, students who are in school need to be trained to have systematic design thinking, good problem solving skills, and the ability to find optimum design solutions for a comprehensive number of design activities. In this study, an innovative engineering design methodology is presented, which includes the quality function deployment and the theory of inventive problem solving methods in the design process. Students practice this methodology through a designated project. Individual topics for every semester are selected after consultation and discussion with a local sponsoring company. New concept designs are generated in a conceptual design stage, and the final design is selected by the decision-matrix technique. This inventive design methodology can be used to make curtains with a lighting function. Such a function offers a higher number of operation modes and makes the curtain more useful and enhances home entertainment. The design results obtained using this methodology indicate that it is effective for students and helps them grasp new design concepts more easily and quickly, even when they are beginners.
