Using Rock Wool Wastes as Partial Replacement of Cement in Cement-Based Composites

Rock wool is an inorganic fibrous substance produced by steam blasting and cooling molten glass. Because the composition of rock wool wastes is similar to other pozzolan materials, rock wool particles can be used as cementitious materials or ultra fine fillers in cement-based composites. This study is aimed to evaluate the properties of cement-based composites using various rock wool waste contents (10%, 20%, 30% and 40% by weight of cement) as a partial replacement for Portland cement in mortars. The pozzolanic strength activity test, compressive strength test, dry shrinkage test, absorption test and rapid chloride penetration test were conducted and compared. Tests results indicate that composites containing rock wool wastes can enhance the mechanical properties and reduce the permeability. These improved properties are the result of the dense structure achieved by the filling effect of pozzolanic product. Pozzolanic strength activity indices and scanning electron microscope observations confirm these findings.
