摘要

The field of biomedical engineering has blossomed with the confluence of nanotechnology with material science, biotechnology, biology and medicine. The most lingering problem in the biomedical arena is bacterial infection at the site of implanted biomaterials. The race between microbial adhesion and tissue integration is a major cause of concern, during the implantation process. There is a serious need to develop a strategy to overcome the set back. First time, for the nanomedicine landscape, we have designed, via herbal route, self-sterilizing novel silver/chitosan-poly vinyl chloride (Ag/CS-PVC) nanocomposite material, to be used effectively as catheter biomaterial for the cardiovascular system. The bark of Terminalia arjuna, the best cardio-protector agent, has been involved for the formation of silver nanoparticles. Several techniques have been used for characterization. Antimicrobial assay shows significant self-sterilizing characteristic of the developed biocompatible nanomaterial. This biomaterial was also found to be blood compatible at specific levels through in vitro testing.
