Excessive body fat raises the risk of metabolic diseases and hence it is important to sensitively predict body fat. BMI has been used as a proxy method for detecting obesity in population but has been criticized for its inaptness in distinguishing between muscle and fat. And hence this study examined several obesity indices for their potential to forebode body fat per cent (BF %). Cross-sectional study was conducted among 20-47 year old healthy Indian premenopausal female subjects (n = 81). Body massindex (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist to height ratio (WHtR), waist to hip ratio (WHR), body adiposity index (BAI) and conicity index (CI) was studied. BF % was estimated from bioelectrical impedance analysis. BMI, WHtR, WC and BAI proved to havestrong correlation with BF %. BMI, WHtR, WC and BAI at their respective optimal cutoff points of 23.1 Kg/mJ (sensitivity 98%), 0.47 (sensitivity 94%), 73.50 cm (sensitivity 98%) and 31.39 % (sensitivity 88%) displayed higher predictive accuracy in determining excess body fat in healthy premenopausal women. Hence, anthropometric indices can be used as an effective tool in adiposity risk assessment at the individual and population level for better understanding of obesity.
