There are increasing application needs identified for particulate materials that can perform some function on external command or in response to a set of locally sensed trigger conditions. Such responsive particles, that sense and react, are sometimes referred to as possessing some degree of intelligence. Higher forms of intelligence include independent on-board ability to sense, make decisions and act in different ways according to the environment. The creation of such entities requires a high degree of materials science and surface/biological engineering.
