A Novel Mobility and Multihoming Support Scheme for Locator/Identifier Separation Networks

Routing scalability, mobility and multihoming support issues are the serious challenges facing the Internet. The IP semantic overload issue presents the technical barriers to the development of the Internet. Locator/Identifier separation has been considered as a promising way to solve these problems. Existing mobility and multihoming support schemes do not take good advantage of such an architecture, hardly meet the application requirements. In this paper, we propose a novel architecture (IdComm) in the Locator/Identifier separation networks to support mobility and multihoming, and meanwhile solve the routing scalability problem using techniques including new routing protocol, new packet forwarding scheme combined with the mapping system, route optimization, short-term storage of data packets on the home border router. IdComm reduces the size of the routing table, and also provides lower handoff latency, packet loss-free and lower packet transferring overhead. Moreover, it also supports multipath and multihoming, and provides the protection against privacy disclosures. The performance evaluations demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposal.
