Isolation and characterisation of Escherichia coli associated with diarrhoeic cases of cattle and man.

247 samples including rectal swabs or faecal material, collected from 67 apparently healthy calves, 86 calves with gastroenteritis, 53 cases of infantile diarrhoea and 41 cases of traveller's diarrhoea, around Calcutta, were examined for E. coli. 147 strains were isolated. The most common serotypes isolated from man and animals were O2, O5, O15 and O22. The public health importance of these findings are discussed.
