The nature of alternative fuels (AFs) presents cement producers with new challenges in terms of operating and maintaining their plants. One such change is the nature of blockages of equipment. As AFs contain higher proportions of sulphur, the coating associated is stickier and harderto remove than a fuel mix consisting entirely of fossil fuels. This leads to material build-up in key parts of the production line, such as cyclones, risers, smoke chambers and kiln inlet.
