Seismic Behavior of Buckling Restrained Braced Composite Frames

Seismic behavior analysis of bolt-endplate connected concrete filled tube column (CFT) and steel beam composite frames with buckling restrained braces (BRBs) is being conducted. The objective is to investigate the seismic performance of this type of frame and to evaluate existing design criteria. Based on China-related design standards and displacement-based design procedures, a 10-story prototype building was designed with buckling restrained braced frames (BRBFs) as the lateral load resisting system. The columns are CFT members and the beams are structural steel sections. Nonlinear time history analyses of a planar BRBF extracted from the prototype building were conducted with the software SAP2000. Earthquake records were scaled to three different seismic input levels: frequent occurrence earthquake (FOE), design basis earthquake (DBE), and maximum considered earthquake (MCE). The BRBF shows acceptable behavior at different seismic excitation levels. A BRBF pseudo dynamic experimental investigation with substructure technique is planned. This paper presents the results of the analytical study and briefly summarizes the upcoming experimental program.
