Distributed Proxy Based Interworking Method for IPv6 Mobile Devices in WLAN Mesh Networks

Multi-hop Wireless LAN-based mesh network (WMN) has been recognized as a suitable technology for wireless broadband consumer networks because of its high capacity and self-configuring capabilities. However, due to data forwarding and path selection based on MAC address, WMN requires additional operations to provide global connectivity to IPv6 address based consumer devices. The neighbor discovery operation over WLAN mesh networks requires repeated all-device broadcasting, which becomes a big burden in the entire mesh networks. So, this paper proposes the distributed proxy based interworking scheme for optimized IPv6 communication over WMN by using the proxy architecture. The proposed scheme reduces network control overhead and communication setup latency by minimizing both the number of flooding trials and the routing distance through the distributed neighbor discovery proxy.
