Graphite products manufacturer Energoprom’s electrode plant in the RuBian city of Chelyabinsk will no longer produce cathode blocks for use in the production of aluminium due to "unfavourable conditions” in the carbon and graphite product markets. This has forced it to cancel its cathode block supply deal with compatriot aluminium producer Rusal, leB than two years into the five-year contract. Energoprom announced the supply contract in January 2018, when the two parties signed a five-year supply agreement for 232,000 tonnes of cathode blocks to be shipped from the Chelyabinsk electrode plant. Energoprom began tapering down operations at Chelyabinsk in late September, and was expected to complete the shutdown by the end of 2019.
