Copper as a key element in the collector bars of aluminium smelter cells

The use of copper for conductors inside the cathodes of aluminium electrolysis cells is becoming a necessity, as the advantages are numerous if it is used in a correct manner. Industrial applications have demonstrated how it allows a significant increase in current and a decrease in the specific energy. Solutions are available with ready-to-use copper bars for cathodes. This paper updates of the main features achievable with copper, and discusses modelling work, measurements and industrial achievements.
