Alum S.A., the only calcined alumina produc- er in Romania, allocated more than USD1m in 2018, in safely storing the red mud from bauxite processing. The company continues its strategic programme of converting red mud into a commercially viable product in other industries, especially to be used in agriculture to neutralize acidic soils so as to increase crop productivity. As part of its environmental pro- tection plan, Alum continues research activ- ities for the commercial use of the mud, with emphasis on acid soil transformation, agri-cultural crop production and plant quality when the soil is fertilized with this product. The annual programme is implemented by the National Institute for R&D for Soil Science, Agro-Chemistry and Environmental Protec- tion (ICPA Bucharest).
