FACING THE FUTURE: NICHIA LED AND LD TECHNOLOGIES FOR AUTOMOTIVE EXTERIOR LIGHTING

Legislation has set mandatory CO_2 emission reduction targets requiring improvements of LEDs and Laser Diodes (LDs) technologies for headlamp systems. For gasoline and electric vehicles, future headlamp designs will require not only energy efficiency light sources, but also digital light distribution to ensure visibility, communication and safety. Weight reduction plays an important role in lowering emissions. Slimmer and smaller front lights can be designed with high luminance light sources. The higher the luminance is, the smaller the light emitting surface is. Nichia offers a whole range of high luminance products from 1mm Chip-Scale Package (CSP) LED to Giga White (GW) laser packages. New LEDs solutions have already reached 200 cd/mm~2 improving headlamp compactness with the combination of a reduced optics size. Additionally, lasers cover higher luminance range than LEDs. Next generations of LDs will improve with integrated solutions of multiple lasers and safety device while focusing on phosphor stability due to highly concentrated beam of light. Overall, with high luminance sources, development of new materials for the body of vehicles and 3D electronics structures integration, smaller form factors can be designed without sacrificing the performance of the headlamp.
