The concept of a cascade gas target with krypton isotopes for medical Sr-82 radioisotope production is described. Using this concept, an experimental setup was created at the U-150 cyclotron of the Kurchatov Institute NRC for Sr-82 production with an Sr-82 yield of approximately 53 mu Ci/mu A h using the Kr-80(He-4, 2n)Sr-82 reaction in the Kr-80 target module. Descriptions of the system and its operation are presented. The setup performed well with reproducible results. It is noted that the Sr-82 radioisotope produced using the setup is free from an admixture of the Sr-85 radioisotope that is responsible for approximately one-half the irradiation dose to workers using standard Sr-82-Rb-82 isotope generators.
