Commerce official: New export control proposals expected soon

The Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security hopes to issue an advance notice of proposed rulemaking on export controls for foundational technologies by the end of the calendar year, and regulations on emerging technologies "shortly," a BIS official said on Tuesday. Eileen Albanese, the director of BIS's Office of National Security and Technology Transfer Controls, also said a new technical advisory committee that will help the agency define emerging technologies is planning to meet for the first time before year's end. The committee will include academics, lab officials and venture capitalists who will comment and advise the government. Albanese spoke on a panel at the Center for Strategic & International Studies.
