Macron stresses WTO compliance when asked about 232 exemption

French President Emmanuel Macron on April 24 said France as a member of the European Union prioritizes adhering to World Trade Organization rules, but dodged a question on whether the EU will receive a permanent exemption to the U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs when asked about them. All EU member states, along with other countries, were granted temporary exemptions from the U.S. global steel and aluminum tariffs. The exemptions expire on May 1. EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom earlier this week said she expected Macron to demand that the EU receive an unconditional and permanent exemption from the tariffs during his trip to Washington, DC this week.
