Study says U.S. withdrawal sweetens TPP deal for Canada and Mexico

Canada and Mexico stand to gain the most from the U.S. decision to withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership, according to a new study on the economic effects of moving forward with the agreement without the U.S. The study was conducted by the Canada West Foundation, a Calgary-based think tank, and released on June 13. Exports of TPP11 countries to the rest of the world are projected to rise 0.23 percent by 2035 because businesses will be incentivized to relocate production into the TPP bloc to obtain the benefits of the deal, the study suggests. This would be particularly advantageous to Canadian and Mexican businesses if U.S. companies choose to relocate, according to the study.
