Algae are a large and diverse group of simple plants that use solar energy to fix carbon through photosynthesis. They form the basis of the food chain in lakes and oceans, range in size from giant seaweeds to tiny free-floating single cells, and are vital to the wellbe-ing of the planet. Algae use solar energy to convert C02into a number of metabolites that can be used across a number of industries including personal care, drugs, food, health, materials, and energy. Such metabolites include oils and lipids, which can be used to produce food and health products, lubricants, biofuels, bioplastics, biosurfac-tants, and many other products.
