Inflammation pathways are critical to many disease processes outside of the classic inflammatory diseases. Key among these non-classical inflammation arenas are metabolic diseases-indeed, pathways in inflammation and metabolism are often two sides of the same coin. In this symposium we will consider emerging concepts for tissue crosstalk and the role of inflammation in metabolic disease. We will then feature a more in depth look at cytokine-like molecules derived from adipose tissue (adipokines) and skeletal muscle (myokines) and their role in muscle-fat crosstalk in metabolism. We will end with an example of how myokine biology has led to potential new therapeutic agents for skeletal muscle wasting conditions, obesity and metabolic disease.
