Acute AmebJc Encephalitis in an Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem-Cell Transplant Recipient Still an Overlooked Diagnosis

Except for cerebral toxoplasmosis, parasitic central nervous system (CNS) infections are extremely rare in allogeneic hematopoietic stem-cell transplant recipients. We report an unusual case of acute amebic encephalitis in an allogeneic hematopoietic stem-cell transplant patient occurring more than 1 year after transplantation. Because the clinical presentation of amebic encephalitis can mimic other more common causes of CNS infection, the diagnosis should be considered whenever more common causes of CNS infection have been excluded.
