Mirant's waste is Lafarge's gypsum fortune

TWO LEADING US industrial companies, Mirant Corp. and Lafarge North America Inc., have signed a contract that will see Mirant supply Lafarge with synthetic gypsum for the production of wallboard. Starting in 2010 Mirant, an independent energy company, will provide Lafarge with synthetic gypsum produced at its Morgantown and Chalk Point power stations in Maryland. Synthetic gypsum is a by-product of electricity generation, during which coal is burned to drive steam turbine engines.
