Tea Industry of Tripura: Origin and Development

The number of the estates, area under tea, production and productivity of tea in Tripura is presented in Table 2.As can be seen from Table 2 and figures (1 to 4) that the conventional number of tea estates has marginally increased from 55 in 1951 to 60 in 1997. The Govt, of Tripura made special endeavours to develop small tea growers in the state (Baruah, 2016). The total number of tea estates of 1, 570 in 2005 consists of smalltea growers other than the 60 conventional tea estates. The area under tea and production have also increased from 4, 773 ha in 1951 to 8,710 ha in 2005 and production from 1,873 thousand kg to 7,515 thousand kg in 2005 respectively. However, the increase in production and productivity of tea in Tripura is not satisfactory compared to other tea growing states of India and all India average.
